It should be obvious, but some people are modifying some maps to gain an advantage, and Battle Tanks is no exception.
I always make a point of downloading the map from the site and destroy all others version I may have picked up.That way I am always sure that I got the last version.
However, I often come across games (which I don't host, it happens :-) ) and the map name is different. This is often the case when the shown name is identical in Bnet, but the actual file name has underscores ('_') instead of spaces (' '). So far every map i've downloaded from the site has been with spaces, but very, very often I come across a file with underscores on Bnet.
Usually, I join the game and point out that the file name is different. But lately I've been attacked on this matter because it implies that the host is actually cheating (he may, or may not, my point was that the file name is different).
One gave me the following explanation, which I have no way of testing, hence my call in this forum. He pretends that depending of the site and browser (IE vs FireFox and even Safari for mac users), the file name MAY be different. I said it was horseshit because the HTTP does not rename files when downloading (he may add a '(2)' to differentiate the file if it was downloaded twice however, but i disgress). He then said some different sites uses different file names.
Now, I only use Firefox (and I don't plan installing IE7 just to test that), and I do not know all of the different DNS related to battle tanks. I known the following list:
btanks.de
btanks.net/v2
A quick google search has shown me no other Battle Tanks (the warcraft 3 map) sites. And all sites download the file with spaces. The guy said something about a domain name ending with ".us", but I was not able to reach it (could not remember the exact site).
I have the feeling that this guy was pulling my leg, but I could not, on the spot, refute his arguments. So if someone would clear my doubts, next time I spot a modified map I can say with 100% certainty that this is not THE official battle tanks map.
And I'm curious: how often does this happens to others b-tankers? I'm on U.S. East BTW.
