Okay, let's get this straight. The Mappers did not want the HB community to piss off as their ultimate goal. Their goal is to make one uniform mode that everyone would like to play – for fun and competitively. You can accuse them of saying they were trying to make players play normal more often, but at the same time were striving to make normal more to HBers crowds liking.
Why do they feel this is necessary? – Because they wanted to have a game that was balanced and can be played competitively by all… If there are two modes, as qweqqewq says, each with “a different balance,” how the hell could you achieve this? Every time you added one thing to one mode in a balanced fashion you’d end up screwing up the second mode. So the goal was to bring the community together, to play a mode that would be enjoyed and played by everyone. A mode a little bit like HB and a little bit like normal – balanced and playable by all.
Now why would they need to remove HB so abruptly? I don’t know – personally I think it was a bad and premature move. You’re right – it’s a kick in the face and the fact that people from the general public had little say before the decision was made probably left a considerable part of the community bitter (half, minority, majority – doesn’t matter, as the HB crowd is considerably large). It fucked up the whole information gathering process, leaving the DevTeam few ideas and opinions to extract from the HB-half of the community. Rather than figuring out how Battle Tanks could be improved, the WHOLE discussion was about whether they should remove HB or not. Instead of figuring out how to they could bring the community together, they effectively push a good deal of it apart before everything was figured out... The funny thing is – if they removed it when such information/suggestion were taken in and the changes made, most people probably wouldn’t give two shits about whether the mode was there or not. It'd just be another obscure fun mode like 30k Tinker.
Now why the hell would people want to help when they feel like something has been stolen away from them? You’re right - most probably don’t, but in the end both the mappers and the players lose out. That said, I’ll say it again – if you don’t want to help and give your input on to improve the game to your liking that’s completely fine – you’re certainly not the only one ticked about the way things went down. But know this – that Paladon’s and Velocity’s intentions were not made out of malice – even IF some of the people around here make it come off that way.
