Hello, this is a really long write, so fasten your seatbelts!Confusedhock:


Well, to start us off, I'm not going to directly say the problem, I'm going to explain in terms of another game. Has anyone played call of duty? Probably any shooter will do. Particularly the difference between SnD ( Search and Destroy, and all the other game types). In SnD the players have to play defensively, and there is alot of focus of shooting the guy who blindly tries to run and plant the bomb. In normal games most players run blindly about trying to capture point but spamming SMG's. Don't get me wrong, smg run n gun is alot of fun, but, In the end, the only games that really survive are the ones with stratagy. Look at Chess, forever a classic. Or mayby wc3 TD's. Flash games are being developed. Or even Tetris and Mindsweeper. Stratagy is an essential point of keeping a game interesting, and maintaining a healthy community. I see a problem where Btanks *is*. The best games I played were with my fellow shaman or clan toaf. We used a mixture of innovative tactics to capture and defend points. This is one thing I absalutely loved about Btanks. Over time, I began to realize how Run N Gun btanks was becoming. "Gotta rush for that demo tank!" or, "Save for Goblin and grab teleporter, its all you need". This kind of gameplay is absalutely sickening, and lead me to start only playing with friends, and then not at all. Although the Run N' Gun blindly tactic is and will forever be better for public games( in public games, there is no stratagy b/c you will never see your team again, and its more about getting a pro K/D than winning). Belive me, its the wrong road to be on.
Well, now that I have spoken my point, how can we change Btanks into something a little more, well shall we say, defensive stratagy oriented? Well, first of all, all the tanks we currently have that are good are offensive mind setted. Lets face is folks, the way to make money is to KILL PEOPLE. But wait, if there was a way to make money without killing people.... Remember the mock of game of Btanks? with the trade post income spots? I think there should be something of the sort, mayby a little more risk return, something like the stock market mayby? an invest for the 5 min marks that grows over time( EX. invest 500 at begin of game, get 500 of back first 5 mins mark, 10 mins in you get 750, or something like that). Ah, here we go, now that we don't all need to rush at enemies to get money, we can play defensive. You know how you can only get SO much out of a tank at a certain price before its broken? Right, we all know that. Well, what if we were able to make things like the gaurd a little more, powerful. But then we get the problem of people using its abilities in "unroot" with teleport pack. So we only let it use its powerful abilities "in-root", or make it more powerful as we have it "in-root". So, now we have 1 tank thats defensive, and is more powerful than other 5k tanks, but only on defense. Cmon! We need some versatility. Mayby have spots on the map that are like fortresses. eh? We could have 3-4 tanks that can "Man" a fortress. The fort could give some healing abilities, spawn healing drones, and start out w/ towers that could be upgraded. Hmm, Not a bad idea... eh? I would suggest making towers a more formidable force... lately, the guy with the tower 99% of the time gets his investment BLOWN out of the water within minutes or even secconds. Give a little more veratility to towers, again, thinking back on that joke mod, you could upgrade a tower into creep oriented, or player.
Alright then, we have one more problem with this change, camping. We don't want to see Btanks go to camp mode, no one does. Campers make everyone anoyied. So, how can we prevent camping. Mayby I have a few insights. Note that whatI was suggesting by "defensive" should not be taken as camping. The defensive tanks should be SO orriented on defense that they are completely USELESS for offensive, making a balance of offense and defense nessisary. D-Tanks should come in a range of styles, from fortress to moving range support. Possible anti camp ideas should be 1) Mayby an Ion laser than can be charged at a distance to fire upon a certain location. This ion would force the offensive players of the team to go out and destroy it, preventing an entire team from playing defense and setting up a "Camp". Defensive tanks should not be allowed within a certain radius of eachother, much like mines. This would also prevent 3-5 players from setting up in a line and becoming a "camp". Eh?
Okay, so now we have a balance of defensive and offensive mindsets, a way to prevent camping, what else? Well, lets think, mayby some versatility... New ideas mayby... My "Fort" idea was discussed a year back with polycrome( for those who no him) in a car ride. Mayby supplement the idea of territories. Make trading a little more viable. I would suggest trying to take the focus of money making off of the tank killing, and on to other things also. But they all have to stay balanced.... Note that this defensive mindset will also help fix the problem with HB.. just a thought.
Okay, here is a really random idea... Kill-streak rewards... lol... Call of Duty anyone? Hey, it works for them, give it a thought....

It's completely possible to make your own mod of btanks to fit your views. What you are suggesting would be a completely different game . Are there going to be newer versions of an open source btanks map?
Going long range in mid takes no skill, so stop telling yourselves otherwise.

Well, I am suggeting some major changes, you could try this: Making a more defensive orriented game type like I suggested, and giving it a try. Put something about the discussion in the loading screen, just as an idea. Truth be told, think about, do you really want to go down the "Angel Arena" road? Give it try, see how popular it is, its not like you can lose anything... Oh and by the way, The whole thing about " No open scource map" is a completely boneheaded thing to do. If someone *really* wanted to get in a make a map of BT for themselves, they could hack it just as easliy as me and polychrome did a while back to look at the scripting and see what all the random stuff was about. Trust me, those of us who are interested in the game scripting and changing the game hardly need any "Open Sorce Version" to do so. All your doing is making people who want to try to help you buzz off. There are already mock version of Btanks out there. The reason people don't play them as much as the normal is because it isn't official. People play your version because its the widely selected to play version, not because its Btanks leage or whatever. I promise you, if someone else makes your game + a bunch of popular changes, clans will start popping up again for the new games. You see? Your "Hoarding" isn't accomplishing anything, I would be happy to have the stopping code broken and give a version to someone who is interested in making this defensive Idea... The reason you shouldn't see what I'm saying as a threat is A) The other D-Btanks would be such a different game it wouldn't be competition, and B) its for the better of your game, I'm sure if its popular we would hand it to you to toy with as your own C) everyone who has a little skill with computers could hack the map, its not such a big deal as you think. Look at Bnet in general, patch after patch is released to try to stop bots and other hacks, yet always, ALWAYS, the bots prevail in the end. Let people play the version they want to play, or just stick with my suggested idea, build it, and see if its popular, you don't lose anything by tryingSmile

As soon as this game was made, changed etc, you can't remove the strategies common to most games.
This includes certain tanks being chosen over other tanks, certain attack items being chosen consistently.

The order of buying items due to strategic importance... speed vs TP? Hulls vs new tanks... which comes first?

I have not played any game lolk7 has mentioned... I just don't get the point other than you have to
kill enemies to get gold. And that's about all I got out of it.

I prefer lower bounty because it widens the window of opportunity to get the most out of your
purchases and allows for greater spans of farming between you and the opposing team.
BUT as lolk7 said, killing players is the only way to really get more gold.

The late-game aspects of towers and how fast they can be destroyed leaves much to be wanted.
We can all remember the snaking death cannon turtle strat that saw that item being changed.
So where do we go to buff towers? Do we declare that towers that have a hull on them get some
magic-attack resistance? Everyone knows that titans rape towers in about 2 seconds.

Scron has a point and makes me think how to define what I'm saying a little better. Currently, we have most players playing with a very offensive mindset, hence comes Kill-Stealing. Remember that anoying guy who always used his 2k Lava-Shot to finish your kill? Yeah... We have seen the offensive game plan explored VERY deaply, with new tanks and multiple gun shops. What I'm saying is explore the other end of the spectrum. I'm saying you should make an investment that increases gold per 5 secconds or something that is only available after picking certain defensive tanks. Not to toot my own trumped, but I think my fortress idea has alot going for it. I think it would be pretty cool to make a "Battle Station" tank. There are limitless ideas for support, while the offensive end of the game has been hammered and hammered. The alt way of getting gold should not be as effective as killing, as it is less risky. But this is fine since the support tank shouldn't need to provide the main fire power. Some possible Ideas for abilities are : An ability that resets cool downs. An ability that Builds a tower from a distance. and many others. I belive the Support tanks should be from things like the gaurd ( a mobile battle station) all the way to tanks that can sit back and really support the team by plopping down and just cutting off creap flows. An intersting idea would be a tank that can literally create other tanks. Mayby call it a constructor. It could learn a wide range of abilities that could be used to creature units of different power levels. offensive, defensive, long range, short range. You could have different costs - 500, 5000, 10000, 15000, or something of the likes. There are endless ideas for support and defense. Personally, I'd like to see farming manifest in some low cost tanks other than the scout. I think BT could go a lot deaper if you could get your focus of the next greatest offensive boss. I've knowticed a trend of "Can you top this?" Also the last few version of been devoid of interesting new changes, please, just give it a try...

Although I like the idea of more strategy and broadening support roles, a more defensive oriented game would likely make the game longer than it already is, which is undesirable to most players.

Time my friend, time... Coding and adding all those units, abilities, etc. take time - time that can be spent elsewhere on the game. It'd be better if you modded it yourself and saw how it would work, because the changes you're changing would change the mechanics of the game drastically. Maybe it'll turn out good, maybe not, but considering most players like the general gameplay the way it is, such overhaul of the game would be risky move at best for the DevTeam.

1. How can we prevent camping?

Control Point Camping can be reduced by increasing the cost of teleporting, instead of reducing it.

2. How can we prevent people being annoyed by kill-stealing?

I suggest the HALF the bounty be shared with the team, and HALF goes to the player with the last hit.

I've always found it ironic the the last-shot gets full credit for the kill. Kill stealing is a product of a system of faulty logic. People do not need to be angry at an ally for helping ensure an opponent dies.

I think sharing hero kill bounty will reduce internal squabbling in half.
