I say keep the box, but I really couldn't care less either way. You can still get a borad idea of what is happening by looking at the minimap, which is not obscured.
Yes you can (usually) tell if someone is away by looking, the AI-afk unit will have all of it's unsued item slots blanked out, to prevent it from purchasing anything.
