Rather than too much work, the weapons would just become imba (if you only do it for a few weapons). I've already done this before on the Light Fantastic and nearly everyone bought the weapon. To balance this you would have to add another upgrade to every weapon and THAT would be too much
The only exception by the way is the laser. You can upgrade the laser two times, but only the range increases, not the damage output itself, so I think in this case its rather balanced. But adding just range upgrades to some weapons is just ... meh.
