Mortar Teams - need nerf?
#1
Meh it's just been pubs an' all, and it has been "rush" mode..... so i guess it certainly does "rush" things along..... but i'm going to just put the thought out there to possibly nerf Mortar Teams.

In this game, and in a few others (this has worked pretty reliably) i've developed a strategy for Rush mode that has proven somewhat overpowering to most opponents (not saying it itself is definately overpowered, but it has proven very strong).

Start with Heavy Tank.

Skills: 4/5 Missile, 4/5 Mortar Teams, 1/5 Cannon, 1 in ult.

Buy: Troop Command.

Tp top/bot, quickly take control point and 2 towers just b4 enemy base.

At this point u should have enough money to afford a Mortar Team Item.

Buy it, and decimate the other side in the same fashion (now being able to have 6 mortar team units at a time + the building armor reduction), but this time, go all the way to the 2 factories in their base on that side.

From there, it's relatively easy to gg in < 20 min, at least in the games i've played.

Obviously they were just pubs and all, and perhaps Mortar Teams are perfectly balanced at higher skill lvl's of play, but still, i did wish to mention this.

Here is a replay of a 15 min game with me doing this.

What you say is true, but if another tank opposes you, you will find it much more difficuilt to take the control point. Since you have sacrificed most of your tank damage for buiding damage, and then you have your speed issues....

You mean the mortar spawned by heavy tank? I think they're useless, cuz the only thing they can do is attack structures. Well they're usefull as long they don't get killed so fast.

But yesterday, there was 3 heavy tanks in our team (including me), and we all used mortar team at the same time, I think we destroyed 2 laser towers and 2 factories quite fast with that  MORTAR PARTY  , the blue heli bought some consumable mortar teams to make a larger mortar party, that was LOL!

But I think the mortar team are good as they are. Effective to bring down tinker towers. Also very effective against structures, which they only can do, at safe range.

I agree, they are quite powerful if used correctly, but they are also defenseless (except for the player guarding them), it's not like they are invincible once spawned. If a base is being taken down by a massive wave of mortar teams and the defending team doesn't know how to respond: that's their incapability, not the mortar teams' imbaness.

Hmmm aight - i agree with it being dependant to a degree on the team's ability to adapt.

However, considering most aoe/multi-target skills have a longer cd than mortar teams (and you have 2 cd's to train them if done as i suggested), and if there are the units from Troop Command to take hits, i have found it very difficult to kill mortar teams, in the scenerio i've laid out at least, before they eliminate buildings.

I'd sure like to try out my strat vs some of you hehe just to see if it can, indeed, be effectively countered by a skilled opponent knowing what to expect.

Even having a tank vs me in my lane, to date, has only succeded in slowing down my advance a bit.

I'm on Lordaeron, and i'll update my bnet name notation here on forums to reflect that.

I'll turn off /o igw for a while and host a few btanks - if someone(s) would be willing, plz join up, or whisper me if u see i've already started and i'll wait for you on next rm.Smile

I use a pretty standardized gn - "Battle Tanks!" first, then with a space and "RM" followed by "RM2" etc.

Hope to see some of you in-game.Smile

<edit> Well i just got totally stomped in a game when using this strat. /grin

They went wpns hardcore, and i found myself useless w/o cooldowns, and only mildly usefull with them.

I do feel rather silly now as i was pretty far off on this whole line of thought - sry about that.Smile

Anyway, i retract my questioning of the balance of Mortar Teams.Smile

Well, its ok to post here when you think something is imba or should be changed, even if you are not sure. I just hope that the forum users here are nice enough not to flame the new members here ... because that already happened sometimes.

Anyway, in my opinion they are now just right. They CAN be usefull, but they are also easy to kill (nearly every AoE-Skill is able to kill them).
This post has been brought to you by Sand - it's everywhere, get used to it.
