Harsh Leaver Penalty System?
#1
With the way the league bots kick players who have left 3 of their last 20 games (I believe that to be the correct number) I have recently had to face two tough decisions:
-In my last game, I had some sort of connection error that produced a lag spike every 4 or 5 seconds. Needless to say, I could barely play. I fed like crazy, and there was little I could do about it. I wasn't registering as a lagger with the warcraft system, so the option to disconnect me never came about. I was basically stuck in the game feeding and bringing my team down.

Why? Because I didn't want to leave and suffer the penalty of having to play a game in the qualifying bot to revive my stay/leave percentage to get back into the league bot. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that this has happened to other people before too. I know it's a minor convenience, but for some players who maybe can only play one game a week, this means that they go two weeks without league play.

This also creates a catch-22 decision for a player who is feeding and is conscious of it. As a player who is returning to btanks after 2 years off, I will admit that I sometimes find myself feeding quite a lot (again, I assume that I am not the only person that when he feeds, he feels bad). A player who is feeding and wants to leave has to weigh the outcomes of each decision (to leave or not to leave):
-Leaving would entail a benefit to his or her team, and would end the loss of dignity. However, he might have to play a game or two in the qualifying bots just to get back to league play.
Sidenote: Here you might argue "Yeah, but the player sucks, so it's good that he's in the qualifying bot." Well yes, that's partly true. However as both a new and experienced player (again, due to returning from a long break) I can say that I have learned much more of the game from playing in the league bots, and in most games I have been a benefit to my team, not a detriment. Sure, there are some players that definitely need to polish up on the basics of the gameplay before playing league matches, but it's harsh (and horribly false) to say that this is true for everyone who is forced to make the decision whether or not to leave.
-Staying would be a boon to the team as you would continue to feed. However, if you stay til the end of the game, you don't have to face a leaver's penalty again.

It's as if the system in place currently makes it worse to leave a game than it is to suck at the game, which I see as a bit backwards. I know many years ago a lot of people left btanks games, but I don't see that as much of an issue anymore. What I see as a bigger issue is players who are feeding (or in a compromised connection state, or whatever else may happen) deciding to stay, because they would rather lose their dignity and hurt their teams than face a leaver's penalty.

Your thoughts? Am I the only one that sees this as a problem?

Actually since the stay rate is the average of your stay, the only way you would go below the 85% cutoff after only 3 games is if you left at the very beginning of each game you played since 1/20=5%. With the situation you described, even if you did leave it would be well into the game meaning it would take a lot more than 3 games to bring you below 85%. I've actually found through personal experience every game I drop or leave drops me around 3% of my staying average.

Anyway the bot supports a connection program known as Gproxy++ so if you have having connection trouble that is causing you to feed as you said, you should definitely check out the thread in the League Subforum and download the product because it's very simple to use (the second one anyway). Then if you still lag after that you should report it to the bot's owner Velocity2k.

I only ever kick people who don't listen to advice and feed and those who are arrogant enough to shout "Top Solo" and feed, it's simply personal policy. Any "conscious feeder" that you describe wouldn't be kicked by me as long as they listen to advice, but once again that only applies to me as most other players aren't so merciful.

Quote:deciding to stay, because they would rather lose their dignity

I don't quite understand what your saying, is leaving a loss of dignity or is staying a loss of dignity? or is it just both? In which case it wouldn't matter whether you left or stayed anyway.

Anyway loss of dignity? HAH! I don't even know why that's a problem since you're not even operating under your real name. Clearly your reputation matters to random people over the internet huh. So the real question is bring down your team or face the penalty. Well firstly I believe if a feeder reforms his ways and plays super conservatively with support items (breakers, orbital, Gaurd, etc.) he can definitely be an asset to his team regardless of what happened to him before in the game so leaving is not the "only option" as you put it except in cases of lag which can be avoided as I described above.

P.S. I like the Catch-22 reference and Boon means "Good thing" not "Bad thing"
