The exploder is in no way noobish. If you don't know how to use it you'll end up teamkilling left and right and helping the other team more than your own. If you do know how, though, you'll make a huge dent in your opponents forces and open up oppurtunities for control point captures and other such things. Besides, it isn't that hard to counter it, so if you're getting killed by exploders all the time just set up a teleport breaker. They're not that expensive and they save you a lot of trouble.
EDIT: Tinker isn't noobish either. If you have no skill with it, you'll just feed, and you'll get nowhere in the long or short run.
